![]() ![]() Diamonds are formed under intense pressure and extreme temperatures between 150 and 650 kilometers below the surface.ĭiamonds are known to have a certain property known as fluorescence. The diamond index surpassed the price of gold for the first time in 2013, reaching a new high. In the near future, the goal is to develop an automated prototype for inspecting ore on a near-infinite scale. Diamonds of only a few millimeters in size are now possible to detect using a new technology. The Development Center for X-ray Technology EZRT in Frth has developed a demonstration that detects diamonds inside volcanic rocks. Others, such as those that occur in the interior of the diamond, may not be visible at all. Some fractures, such as those that occur along the grain of the diamond, are too small to be seen. Keep in mind, however, that not all fractures will be visible with an X-ray. This picture can then be examined for any fractures. An X-ray machine can be used to take a picture of the inside of a diamond. ![]() While a cleavage fracture is usually easy to see with the naked eye, the other types of fractures are not. A diamond can also be broken by hitting it at the “corner” of its octahedral faces. It occurs when a diamond is hit along one of its natural planes of weakness. The most common type of fracture found in diamonds is called a cleavage. If a diamond is hit in just the right way, it can shatter. A diamond is extremely hard, but it is also very brittle. ![]()
